Come on all you creative types
Terry Whitebeach is holding a workshop
in Tennant Creek in November
We asked Peter Callinan from
Barkly Arts who he thought should attend
The workshop is designed for poets, story tellers, illustrators,
cartoonists and graphic artists in the Barkly region. It's a chance
for writers and visual artists to spend a day together, doing creative
work.
The morning session will be a practical one, aimed at improving writing
and illustrating skills. We'll do some group and individual exercises,
play with words and images, give and receive feedback and, hopefully,
generate new ideas and new work. Some of the things the workshop will
cover are finding the starting point for a story, poem, drawing or family
history, discovering what you really want to say, draw or write, developing
the idea, crafting raw material into the completed work, revising and
editing and sending your work out into the world.
In the afternoon we will build on the work begun in the morning and
also brainstorm ideas for a book by Barkly artists and writers - a grass
roots publication for 1999 to showcase Barkly talent.
The idea of a book has been around for a while now, and this workshop
will give interested Barkly artists and writers a chance to get in on
the planning, from the beginning. Size, format, length and content.
What image of the Barkly will the book portray? All these questions
will be addressed, as well as the practical steps involved in putting
the book together.
The workshop will be facilitated by Alice Springs writer and community
artist, Terry Whitebeach. Terry is a poet and novelist, a performer
and editor. She has worked as a community artist in most Australian
states and territories, and in New Mexico, California and Arizona. She
has conducted writing workshops for children and adults, facilitated
community theatre projects, and assisted groups and individual writers
develop their work. She has also been involved in the publishing of
a number of collections of community writing, and has also worked in
commercial publishing, as the manager of IAD Press.
The morning session runs from 10am - 12 noon and the afternoon session
from 1pm - 4pm. Lunch will be available at the venue.
