Tennant women meet
to address the problem
of domestic violence
A series of domestic violence workshops are taking place in Tennant
Creek and the Barkly Region over 3 weeks, finishing on the 3rd of August.
From Elliot to Barrow Creek (Thangkenharenge and Tara) taking in Ali
Curung, Canteen Creek Epenarra, Corella Creek and Lake Nash (Alpurrurulam),
the workshops are aimed at increasing women's knowledge and skills in
relation to this ubiquitous crime. The raising of community awareness
and the empowerment of women in their decision making will be the focus
throughout.
Participating in these gatherings are community women as well as many
service providers.
The series of workshops was organised by Sharon Kinraid from the Tennant
Creek Domestic Violence Counselling Service auspiced by BRADAAG.
The all pervasive and intergenerational effects of domestic violence
was the motivation for the attendance at the Julalikari workshop of
the Stolen Generation's Counsellor, Raelene Bruns who will be accompanying
trainers Virginia Elliot and Pam Greer to inform and explain her new
service.
