Careers Expo
Adam Randall,
Manager Julalikari Job Place
On Wednesday 10th March 1999, Julalikari Job Place will
host A Careers Expo in Tennant Creek at the Sport and Recreation Centre
in Standley Street.
The aim of the Expo is to give present and future job seekers a preview
of the types of jobs on offer in and around Tennant Creek. It is to
everyone's advantage for town businesses to be able to show how they
work, what they do and what skills that requires.
Even students intending to pursue further studies before entering the
workforce can benefit by seeing first-hand what there is on offer around
the place. In this way the disheartening experience may be avoided of
discovering, after years of study, that you don't really like working
in the area that your studies have taken you.
The Expo may help you make the best choice of a career either now or
in the future.
The doors open at 3pm and through to 9pm. Everyone who attends will
be eligible to enter the draw to win two return tickets to Darwin compliments
of AIRNORTH. There will be other prizes as well.
Here's your chance to plan your future. Be at the Julalikari Job Place
Careers Expo on March 10th. Contact Adam Randall at the Job Place office
at 1/9 Paterson Street (next to Centrelink) for further information.
Surfing at the Town Library
Linda Winzar used the Library's internet
facilities to email this, her last,
story to BNP before hopping on a plane never to be seen again
Two computer terminals to facilitate public access to the Internet
are now available at the Tennant Creek Public Library.
Council received an Online Public Access Initiative Grant from the Commonwealth
Government to establish the facility.
Access costs are subsidised by the Town Council. Library members can
access the Internet for a special rate of $1 per half hour. The Library
also makes this facility available to non-library members including
Tennant's tourist/backpacker population.
Adoption of this latest technology will broaden the Library's capacity
to meet the growing demands of the community and ensure the Library
keeps up-to-date with new developments in this area.
The facility has been available since 1998 but the addition of the second
terminal this year and the switch to the local Internet service provider
Swtch.com has resulted in an improved service now being offered to the
public.
Word processing and printing facilities are also available. Future plans
include providing access to various CD-ROMs.
Library staff are able to provide information about accessing the Internet
and assistance with retrieving information.
One of the most popular uses of the Internet is accessing e-mail facilities
and staff can assist with registering for an e-mail account.
Various books are also available to assist with use of the Internet
and computers in general. These include the current best selling computer
title "The Rough Guide to the Internet' by A. Kennedy (1998) and
the popular "Australian Internet Book" by Ebbs, Horey and
Redger.
The Library also has a copy of the bestseller guaranteed to get you
up to speed quickly "Easy Internet" by Michael Miller. Described
as the fastest and easiest way to learn the Internet this book contains
information about the various ways to surf the Internet, and what you
need to know about web browsers and searching skills. It also contains
information on sites for children and families, newsgroups, e-mail and
chatting on the net.
You can also "Teach Yourself to Create a Home Page in 24 Hours"
with Rogers Cadenhead book which includes a CD-ROM.
The Library also subscribes to "Australian Personal Computer"
Australia's leading computer magazine with 100% Australian content and
a jam-packed CD with every issue.
