Personality Plates

Gayle Mills can make all kinds

Friends of ours in Alice Springs sell number plates down there and I had a look at them and thought that it was something different for Tennant Creek. I've only been doing it since August.
They're made in the Alice Springs jail by the inmates and they're fairly quick with the delivery and the making.
I tell them what I want on it and then the inmates will print it. I'd hate to think how many they would do but it would be quite a lot.
As far as I know it's all hand made, the letters are punched onto the plate. They are the size of a standard number plate.
There have been some like BITCH and GRUMPY on them, it's anything that you want virtually, footballs team are especially popular. The Crows and the Broncos have gone really well.
I'm getting a 'Tennant Creek' one made especially for here which is my own screen. That's going to have, where you've got the CENTRAL AUSTRALIA at the top, I'm going to have TENNANT CREEK and then HEART OF GOLD or GOLD COUNTRY with a Headframe on the left hand side. It will be in the Territory colours, the ochre colours and I think that it will go down well with the tourists too.
They've been selling really, really well; it's something different for people for presents and to just hang on their wall. We've got one on our outside wall with OUR HOUSE on it. There's room for eleven letters but you've only got to allow for the spaces.
You can get as many as you want of the same one, there's no limit but you can't use them on your car, they're merely for decoration but they are authentic number plates.
Sarah is selling them up at The Nook & Cranny. Some of the motels would probably like to have them for tourists so once I get the Tennant Creek one made, I'll take it around and show them. I'll see what the screen print looks like of that and then if it looks okay I'll go ahead with it.
I sell them for $10.00 for one plate and $2.00 postage to get them up from Alice Springs, so it's pretty reasonable.
They have been sent down to 'Hey Hey it's Saturday' to advertise their show. It was sent to them as a gift and they did apparently hold it up on the telly, it had HEY HEY IT'S SATURDAY but they had to have two plates because obviously it's too big for one.
Another reason too why I decided to have the Tennant Creek ones made is that tourists have been known to steal them off cars so they've got a Central Australian or Territory plate! Sarah and Michael have had them pinched off their car at the caravan park.
Outback plates are very popular because it's got the goanna on it and that's why I think the one with the headframe on it will do really well. Because Tennant Creek is gold country I thought I'd have something to advertise that and it's something the tourists can take home as a remembrance as well.
