New faces at Crafts Council

The Crafts Council has a new Committee and Project Officer. The new committee is headed by Pam Perry, a well known Tennant Creek art enthusiast and the new Project Officer is Frederique Mouchet. If you need any information about the Crafts Council and it's activities, ring Frederique on 8962 1252, or drop into the Craft Council rooms at the Training Centre, Tuesday - Thursday 8am -12 noon.

New markets for Barkly art

Anyinginyi Arts is on a mission - to take the art and artefacts of the Barkly region to the world. While the art of the Centre and of Arnhem Land is now known throughout the world, the art produced by Barkly artists has so far had little exposure nationally and internationally. This is despite the wonderful quality of artwork produced here.
In future it is hoped the gallery will not only exhibit the very best of the art and artefacts of the region but introduce visitors to the Barkly to the culture and lifestyle of Aboriginal people. In this way the gallery will become a learning experience for tourists, a promotion of the unique identity of Aboriginal people, and a way to forge greater understanding of Aboriginal culture.
It also hopes to re-establish the centre as a resource for local people - to learn the arts and skills of their forebears and also new skills such as pottery and print-making.
Anyinginyi Arts is located at the top end of Davidson Street opposite Congress Clinic and is managed by Tony Jefferies and Koominjay Dixon. They look forward to your visit.

Exciting program for Women's Arts and Crafts

Julalikari Council CDEP Women's Arts and Crafts has an exciting program lined up for 1998. The Pink Palace will be hosting 3 artists in an artist-in-residency program. The 3 artists are Judy Watson, who represented Australia in the Venice Biennale last year, Michelle Brown from Roebourne W.A., a textile artist who recently spent time working in China and Madeleine Meyer, a ceramicist and printmaker who has just returned from Glascow and Japan. The 3 visiting artists working at the Pink Palace are looking forward to a valuable exchange of information, techniques and professional practice. We'll keep you informed. The Pink Palace is currently exhibiting work, with Desart at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Tennant Creek Theatrical Club

As one of longest running clubs in Tennant Creek, we are pleased to have this opportunity to have an article in the inaugural issue of The Barkly News Pictorial. Being at the beginning of the season it is appropriate to give an idea of what productions we have in mind, whilst congratulating ourselves over the success of 'Pygmalion' last year and the award of Best Community Event on Australia Day.
We would like to kick off this year with a murder mystery play in a music hall setting. It usually takes three months to complete a production and involves a commitment from lots of people. Shortly it will advertised as to the audition times etc.
Other projects on the board include getting Theatre Sports up and running again, Desert Harmony and there is talk about putting Macbeth on!!
This club is recognised as the presenter group for visiting troupes and last year we hosted the Darwin Theatre Company with 'Stage Fright' and have been in discussion with Ozopera trying to negotiate having 'the Magic Flute' later this year. We are also in discussion with Circuit North, the Northern Territory Performing Arts Touring board about supporting CoOpera in 1999.
The club is as strong and vibrant as it's members and welcomes new people. No experience is necessary as it is gained very quickly once a production is underway, so look out for the ads for meeting times or talk to anyone involved in the club and get involved yourself!!!!
