True
Romance

TONY JEFFERIES

Why are Tarantino movies better than other movies?
Because Tarantino paints a big picture. 'True Romance', Tarantino's first script to be made into a major Hollywood film is about the American Dream: fulfillment and happiness achieved through the medium of millions of bucks.
Like all Tarantino films it is a morality play. There is often little subtlety in a his films - the big issues are always in stark contrast:faith/betrayal; love/hate; courage/fear.
It is this uncompromising morality that makes Tarantino's work so strong. Sure you can make a million bucks - but unlike most Hollywood plots - there are no shortcuts. Your destiny is determined exactly by the quality of your thoughts and actions - a very religious concept. In 'True Romance' the hero [Christian Slater] and the heroine [Patricia Arquette] pull through because their love and faith in one another is indestructable. As in the work of Aechylus and the Greek tragedians the second best outcome is a noble death such as befalls the hero's father [Dennis Hopper]; the corrupt, the evil-hearted fall by the wayside.
Violence punctuates Tarantino's films as it does any classical tragedy. It is the story of life compressed into a couple of hours. Violence brings matters to a head and resolves them in a way that might require decades or generations in real life.
Actors love Tarantino's work - as evinced by the quality actors who line up to appear in his work. The scene between the mobster Christoper Walken and the hero's father Dennis Hopper; Slater's inspirational confabs with the ghost of Elvis; all these are gems. The film, written by Tarantino but directed by Tony Scott is not as relentless, as tightly focussed, as Tarantino's self-directed later and more famous work but all the Tarantino themes and motifs are there. A minor classic.

Wicked or wot?

"Spawn" the album
reviewed by Melanie Henderson

This album is a mixture of grunge, heavy metal and techno played by a number of usually contrasting bands. These bands, combined for a song, produce a sound all on their own. Such a mixture would be heavy metal and techno or grunge and techno.
There are some very well known bands on this album such as Marilyn Manson, Korn, Filter, Metallica, Prodigy and Silverchair to name a few. Some other not well known bands which are featured are Orbital, Moby, 808 State, DJ Spooky and Tom Morello.
I wouldn't recommend this album for people who don't like either of these types of music, but it is definitely a uniquely sounding album and I urge you to at least have a listen to it. You might surprise yourself! For those hard core rockers out there, all I can say is don't miss it 'cause it ROCKS!
Some songs featured on this album can really get you moving and others are good just to sit and listen to, such as 'Tiny Rubberband" by Butthole Surfers and Moby. Most people may have heard the song "(Can't you) Trip like I do" by Filter and Crystal Method. This is one of my favourites on the album and if you've heard it, I'm sure it's one of yours too.
This album definitely deserves 5/5 spuds for its sound originality and if the movie is anything like the album, it's one I won't be missing!
